Deciduous and Annual Salvias
Annuals: Growth, flowering and setting of seed all in one season
Deciduous: A perennial that looses it’s leaves in winter / cooler months. Some are only deciduous in colder area, but may remain green in warmer areas
Herbaceous: A perennial that dies back during winter and re shoots in Spring or warmer weather.
Perennial: A plant that has a long lasting root stock, (more than 1 year), that may die down in winter and reshoot or remain green throughout it’s growing life
Rosettes / Clumps: Plants that produce usually large basal leaves that either remain in a rosette type form or form an elevated clump of leaves. Most of these plants ( but not all ) are herbaceous.
Many send up 1 – 2 stems of branched flower heads in the form of panicles above the clump. Usually all have falcate type flowers in a whorl around the stem. Most have about 6-8 flowers to the whorl. All have flowers with interesting markings. They usually flower from late spring to late summer, finishing by autumn before those that are herbaceous begin preparing to “go down” for winter.
