Shade Loving

Many Salvias are shade loving, depending on the degree and the type of shade.

Many grow well on the Eastern and Southern side of the house.. Most  are tall with large leaves. Although originating from tropical countries, they generally are found high in the mountains in cool rainforest areas. Many Salvias like dappled or semi shade and do well growing through deciduous trees, and some even grow in dry shady areas, as many originate from high mountainous areas in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Not many Salvias grow well in dense shade.

Whilst many grow well in dappled shade, they also can grow in a sunny position if mulched well and protected from hot dry winds and frost. Most large leaf Salvias are frost tender.
