Salvia ‘Heatwave ‘Glimmer’ (PBR ) ( microphylla): A microphylla type of plant, low growing bushy shrub 60cm H in full sun, with cream flowers and dark calyces.
Salvia ‘Heatwave Glimmer’ (PBR): will brighten up any dull corner of the garden, adding a vibrancy to the garden.
Flowers: are a typical microphylla shape, the creamy hood has soft hairs with an exserted stigma. The tube and 2 side lobes have a tinge of pink, but the bottom lobe is cream. Although the main flowering period begins in spring, flowering will continue for most of the year until cut back in autumn.
Calyces: are a dark purple with dark purple hairs along the ribs. Each lobe is narrow and pointed. This contrast of colouring shows off the cream and pink tinge of the corolla beautifully with the dark calyx.
Leaves: are mid green, a typical microphylla leaf, elongated, oval shape with small crenations along the edges.
Salvia ‘Heatwave Glimmer'(PBR): is a good small tough, hardy plant for the front of the bed. Besides putting on a strong display of creamy flowers all summer, it also clips well if grown as a hedge. Best grown in a sunny position in a good friable well drained soil.
Tough for summer dry heat and hardy for winter cold, even tolerating light frosts.
Grow this lovely Salvia as a foil among other vibrant blues, purples and pale pink coloured shrubs and perennials or grow it among other yellows and orange perennials to cool down the colour scheme. Being a pale cream colour, it pairs and contrasts well with all those colours in the garden. It brightens up any dull dark corners of the garden.
The pale colour attract moths during the nights and bees throughout the day .
Pruning: is best done at the end of autumn when the main flowering has finished. This is a shrub that can be lightly trimmed, if growing as a hedge or cut back by cleaning out any dead or twiggy stems. Always cut back to a good green bud.
After cutting back, feed and mulch well to keep the root area cool for the summer months and warm over the cold winter months.
